Alpha hydroxy acid, also commonly referred to as AHA’s, are water soluble acids derived naturally from plant sources such as sugar cane (glycolic acid), citrus fruits (citric acid), apples (malic acid), grapes (tartaric acid) and from milk (lactic acid). In low concentrations, 3% or less, alpha hydroxy acids act as a water-binding agent. In high concentrations, 4% or more, the ingredients will break down those substances holding dead skin together and exfoliate the skin. Alpha hydroxy acids essentially peel away the surface of the skin so that new evenly pigmented skin cells can be generated. Alpha hydroxy acid is used to get younger looking skin by sensitising the mucous membrane and improving signs of ageing, evening skin tone, and reducing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (when your skin produces extra melanin after irritation or inflammation). There is ample research that shows the unwanted effects of ageing on the skin can be improved by topical applications of alpha hydroxy acid based products.
It is extremely important to note that alpha hydroxy acids cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Wearing sunscreen daily will reduce risks caused by UV exposure.
